<image:caption>French Dinky ‘Cougar’ Toys Are these Dinky Toys? Well, yes & no. They have’ Dinky Toys’ embossed into their plastic bases. The green one is a BMW 530, the gold one a Peugeot 504. They’re French Dinky Toys and were produced 1980/81. Maghull's Frank Hornby Heritage Centre acquired them (plus 2 others) recently and has been looking into how they came about. We know they're French Dinky Toys, but they're also known as Cougar Models. Many of the 'Airfix’ era Dinky Toys were produced in the early 1980's in France under the name of Cougar Model Toys. For example, the BMW 530 four-door saloon car. The Model number is 1404. It was issued in the early 1980's, the scale being about 1/43rd. This one is in metallic green and is of both die-cast and plastic construction. The interior is in grey plastic with a plastic cream base. 'Cougar' decals are applied to the side doors. The wheels being black coloured ‘Speedwheels’. The Cougar decal is also on the Peugeot 504. A liitle further digging on the internet and we discovered the involvement of French model-making company Solido. You could call them French Dinky ‘follow-ons’. They’re going on display at Maghull's Frank Hornby Heritage Centre</image:caption>

<image:caption>1939 Hornby Dublo D2 Set This is a cracking addition to the displays of Hornby items at Maghull's Frank Hornby Heritage Centre. It dates from 1939 and was recently passed on to us by Mike Howard. The excellent Brighton Toy and Model Museum has some interesting information about this wooden D2 set:- https://www.brightontoymuseum.co.uk/.../Category:Hornby... We don't have the full set (which sold for 25/- in 1939) because the arched station canopy part is missing. We do, however, have the separately purchased wooded block signal box (see below), which sold for 11d. What a find, thank you so much Mike.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2025 Update - On seeing a brand new Meccano set on sale at a major UK retailer in November ‘25 we checked who the producer currently is. It seems Meccano is currently made by a network of partners under the ownership of Canadian company Spin Master. The last Meccano producing factory, which was located in France, closed in 2024, with production continuing through Spin Master's global partners in Europe, Asia, & Latin America. We wonder what Liverpool-born and world famous Maghull resident Frank Hornby would think of today's Meccano offerings nearly 90 years since his death?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dinky Toys - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Page 13 of the last ever Dinky Toys Catalogue from 1978 In the very last days of Liverpool’s famous Meccano Factory Dinky Toys were working on two model cars from the New Avengers a popular TV programme of the time. In 1978 a Triumph TR7 was produced in an interesting ‘Purdey’ livery which was, of course, not how it appeared on TV where it was just a pain yellow TR7. Dinky had a habit of bringing to the market models that weren’t quite as they appeared in TV programmes but which they clearly thought would be more interesting to those buying them. Maghull’s Frank Hornby Heritage Centre has a ‘Purdey’ TR7 on display but it’s definitely seen a lot of play wear! There was to have been a ‘Steed’ Jaguar too, plus a boxed set of both cars but these did not see the light of day production-wise. Both cars made it into the final (1978) Dinky Catalogue though. Interestingly, Steed’s Jag was to have been produced by Lintoy in Hong Kong, due to Liverpool’s Binns Road factory being well on the way to closure (it closed November 1979) with management seeking to cut costs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here’s an 00 gauge model of a British Rail Class 56 diesel locomotive on display at Maghull's Frank Hornby Heritage Centre - No. 56 101 The significance is that it's only the 2nd loco to have 'Frank Hornby' nameplates fitted to it, the other being the well-known Class 86 electric loco which had its nameplates unveiled by Ken Dodd at Liverpool Lime Street Station back in the 1980s. A set of those very nameplates is now on the wall in our Heritage Centre c/o The Hornby Railway Collectors' Assn. We are unsure how long 56 101 had the nameplates affixed but are delighted to have a Hornby Railways replica of it in our collection on a long-term loan. The model was produced by Hornby Railways but without 'Frank Hornby' nameplates. Our Trust has added them.</image:caption>

Production at the Binns Road factory in Liverpool ceased in 1979. The acquisition of the Dinky trademark was announced by Matchbox Toys in 1987. Dinky Collection In 1988 Matchbox announced the first models of its new Dinky Collection range, which was intended to capture the spirit of the original Dinky Toys era. 35 models were issued in the period from 1988 to 1995.</image:caption>

<image:caption>HORNBY-MINITRIX 1974 catalogue - Donated to our Trust from the estate of Berarnd McGurk. The German Minitrix company had been producing Models of British locomotives in Wrexham - using Minitrix chassis made in Germany. Thernglade was a company set up by Mintrix in order to continue this production. By 1973, they had moved their production to Germany and were looking for a company to market their British range of Models. Around the same time, Rovex were looking for a way into the N gauge market, and German Trix were keen to have them as a UK importer and distributor. So on 1st January 1973, Rovex were able to start selling the German N gauge models of British locomotives under the name of Hornby Mintrix. The first catalogue of January 1973 proudly announces the Hornby Mintrix range of 4 locomotives, 2 of which Hornby were able to announce as being brand new to the Mintrix range Information from - Classic UK Minitrix Models - Home Page</image:caption>
